Why You Should Snack

We know. Snacking sounds like the bad friend that always makes you make bad decisions. But really, snacking is the good friend that's always looking out for you and helps you out when you need them... if you're not naughty.

Snacking is an important part of your diet. A healthy snack can help your diet by giving you a needed energy boost throughout your day and decreases your hunger, helping to manage overeating at meal times. Although snacking has been thought to be counterproductive to dieting, Chapelot (2010) who wrote The Role of Snacking in Energy Balance: a Biobehavioral Approach, says that there has been no studies proving that this is the case.

Apart from the energy boost and management of overeating, there are many more great reasons to have snacks!

1. Helps you meet your daily calorie intake

Although its very different for each individual person, Healthline states:

"The average woman needs to eat about 2000 calories per day to maintain, and 1500 calories to lose one pound of weight per week. An average man needs 2500 calories to maintain, and 2000 to lose one pound of weight per week."

If you count your calories, you'll find it is actually quite difficult to make the standard calorie suggestion. As a result, your body will go into starvation mode and make it harder for you to lose weight.

2. Helps with concentration and focus

Ever dreaded 3pm coming around because of the low energy that comes? When you're hungry, you're not focussed. Snacking will help give you that energy boost to get through it and help you concentrate. Take a break every now and then (especially if you sit at a computer all day) and have a snack.

3. Provides you with nutrients

Wonder how anyone makes the daily fruit and vegetable intake suggestion? Snacking is the key! It will help give your body more nutrients that you may not be getting enough of in your meals. It's okay to have a naughty snack every now and then, but snacking should be to give your body what it needs.
